If you can't score the one that matters, what's the point?

2007-12-21

Marian Gaborik recently lit the lamp 5 times in a game against a very struggling New York Rangers team.  His team scored 6 goals, in a 6-3 win.

I say this, why bother scoring five goals if you can't even score the game winner?  Poor Pierre-Marc Bouchard gets none of the accolades he deserves.  HE IS THE REAL HERO!!

Bouchard scored the Wild's fourth goal, which ended up being the winner.  Where is his picture in the morning paper?  Where is his first star nomination?

I was always brought up with the assumption that quality is greater then quantity.  And Bouchard is pure quality, one third of his goals end up being game winners.  Less then a quarter of Gabby's goals end up being winners.

So I say enough of the Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Henrik Zetterberg, and Ilya Kovalchuk talk.  Let's focus on the guys that TRULY matter!  The Jeremy Roenicks, Patrick Sharps, Niklas Hagmans, Martin Erats, and Mike Griers of the world!  All of which have at least 4 game winning goals.  Of the top 20 goal scorers in the league, only 6 of them can boast that.  And 9 of them have 2 or less game winners.

Worst Ratios: [Having scored at least 18+ goals]
Ilya Kovalchuk 7%
Daniel Alfredsson 10%
Rick Nash 11%
Henrik Zetterberg 12%
Alexander Ovechkin 12%

Best Ratios: [Having scored at least 4+ winners]
Jeremy Roenick 83%
Mike Grier 80%
Martin Erat 44%
Niklas Hagman 36%
Patrick Sharp 31%

So I'm going to start a petition, to get a new trophy added to the NHL.  The unsung hero award.  Jeremy Roenick should be getting consideration for the Hart trophy, when he scores his team wins!

Let's give the credit to the guys that deserve it, let's give it to the guys who score WHEN IT MATTERS!!!
